The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce Hires Two New Employees
Melanie Mackey and Meredith Murphy Join to Help Support Chamber Members, Community, and Region
WEST DES MONES, IA (July 6, 2022) –
The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce (WDM Chamber) welcomes two new team members, Melanie Mackey and Meredith Murphy, to help support the WDM Chamber and City of West Des Moines. Mackey joins as events and marketing coordinator, and Murphy joins in a newly created role as talent attraction coordinator. Mackey will report to Tom Florian who was recently promoted to senior director of membership and strategic marketing, and Murphy will report to Kara Matheson who was recently promoted to vice president of workforce development and culture.
“We could not be more excited to welcome Melanie and Meredith to our Chamber family. We have seen tremendous growth and these two experts will be adding to our award-winning line of programing and member offerings to help continue to position West Des Moines as the best city in America to live, work, and play,” said Katherine Harrington, the WDM Chamber’s president & CEO.
Mackey graduated from William Penn University in Oskaloosa in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in digital communications with an emphasis in public relations. During her time as a full-time college student, she worked as a gymnastics coach, youth theatre intern, part-time radio DJ and volunteered at the local Chamber of Commerce. She went on to become a wedding planner, running the popular venue space at the Iowa Taproom for four years. When not at work, you can find Mackey hosting open mics and performing standup comedy in Des Moines and across the Midwest.
“I am so excited to be joining the team,” Mackey said. “Their energy is electric and their passion for building a thriving community is so empowering. I am thankful for this opportunity to be a part of it.”
Murphy graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and music in May of this year. At Iowa, Murphy played clarinet in the Hawkeye Marching Band, was president of Sigma Alpha Iota, and served as Iowa’s campus representative for the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). Through NRHH, she represented over 30 institutions after being elected as an associate director of the Midwest affiliate of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, an entirely student run non-profit focused on promoting leadership and service to the community. Murphy previously served as an event manager for Bread Garden Market in Iowa City and is excited to use her diverse set of experiences to promote and further the goals of the Chamber family. When not at work, you can find Murphy exploring the area, cooking a new recipe, or hanging out with her cat.
“The fun, passionate, and talented group of people here at the Chamber are some of the best people I have met,” Murphy said. “I can’t wait to join in the work we do to serve this community that I am proud to call my new home.”
Both new team members officially started with the WDM Chamber July 1st and they can be contacted at meredith@wdmchamber.org and melanie@wdmchamber.org.
