WDM Chamber and City of WDM Announce Raccoon River Rally Presented by Google Fiber

WEST DES MONES, IA (WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 2021) – The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce (WDM Chamber) and the City of West Des Moines (WDM) are excited to announce the inaugural Racoon River Rally (RRR) presented by Google Fiber scheduled for October 2. RRR is the first fall festival of its kind at Blue Heron Lake celebrating WDM’s community and waters. Attractions for the event will include a morning bike ride, live music, cardboard boat races, an exhibitor fair, beer sale and food trucks.

“As the presenting sponsor, Google Fiber is excited to be part of this first-of-its-kind event in West Des Moines, as we bring our first-of-its-kind internet to the community,” said Sarah Sparks, Customer Acquisition Manager for Google Fiber. “As a local resident, I’m looking forward to seeing the incredible creativity that our neighbors will bring to their boats and can’t wait to see what fares best on Blue Heron Lake.”

A portion of sponsorship proceeds will benefit the Great Outdoors Foundation, a regional conservation leader and catalyst for high impact environmental projects. Great Outdoor Foundation is currently raising funds for the Central Iowa Water Trails.

“Our vision is to make West Des Moines the best suburban city in America to live, work and play. Now is the time to show pride in our vibrant community at this new festival,” said Therese Wielage, board chair for the WDM Chamber and Explore WDM Committee leader, “This is a chance to immerse yourself and your entire family in the outdoors. West Des Moines is excited to have a blast and show off the best the West has to offer!”

Individuals and teams are encouraged to create their own cardboard boat that will be ‘raced’ on Blue Heron Lake. Winners will take home trophies and bragging rights in the categories of fastest boat, most creative, best corporate boat, and the Titanic award.

“The more outlandish, the better,” said Katherine Harrington, president and CEO of the WDM Chamber, “Part of the excitement will be thinking of the theme of the boat you want to create and going for it! This will be a great way to get together with friends and co-workers and have some fun.”

RRR will be held on Saturday, October 2 from 12 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The bike ride will kick off the day at 11 a.m. and cardboard boat races will begin at 2 p.m. Two bands will be featured on the sound stage at the event. The Dick Danger Band will play from 12 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. and the Tony Bohnenkamp Cover Band will play from 3:15 p.m. – 6 p.m. Visit the Chamber’s website for more information and to sign up for the bike ride and boat races.
