WDM Chamber Announces Get Active Fundraiser for Two Nonprofits

WEST DES MONES, IA (TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 2022) – The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce (WDM Chamber) recently announced fundraising efforts held in conjunction with the Athene Black & Brown Business Summit (the Athene Summit): Get ACTIVE for the Athene Black & Brown Business Summit (Get ACTIVE Fundraiser). Bike, walk, run or just get active the week before the Athene Summit (April 11 – 15) to promote health, support social justice and raise funds for Hispanic Educational Resources/Conmigo Early Education Center and Willkie House, who will receive 100% of the funds raised.

"Hispanic Educational Resources Inc. is honored to be selected as one of the recipients of the Athene Black & Brown Business Summit fundraising efforts,” said Claudia Garcia Brown, board president of Hispanic Educational Resources Inc. “As we all know, the last two years have been challenging for everyone, and nonprofits, especially those that provide childcare services, have struggled with everything from closures, lower enrollment and workforce shortages. When we learned we were one of the two nonprofits select, it was a wonderful feeling to see all the work our staff, teachers and volunteers do each and every day recognized with this honor. We are looking forward to using the funds awarded to help improve and expand the services we provide at Conmigo Early Education Center."

Hispanic Educational Resources/Conmigo Early Education Center and Willkie House were selected via an application process, which called for 501c3, social justice oriented nonprofit organizations to apply. This process happens annually, and two new organizations will be selected in January of 2023.
"The Willkie House has been a pillar in Des Moines' Black community for 105 years, and we are honored to have been selected for this support,” said Alex Rice, executive director of Willkie House. “At the Willkie House, we believe that it takes a village to raise a child, so we are so grateful to our community for rallying around us in this way and being part of our village.”

Special recognition of the fundraiser and a live check presentation will take place during the Athene Summit on April 22 from 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. Registration to attend is currently open, with in person and virtual tickets available for purchase on the WDM Chamber site.

To participate in the Get ACTIVE Fundraiser, you can register for $25 on the WDM Chamber site. Additional donations are accepted. Deadline to register is Monday, April 18.
