WDM Chamber of Commerce Awarded MLK Jr. Community Organization Leadership Award

WEST DES MOINES, IA (Tuesday, January 25, 2022) - The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce (WDM Chamber) was awarded the Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Community Organizational Leadership Award last Monday. The committee that organized the event at which it was distributed consisted of representatives from the City of West Des Moines (WDM), WDM Human Rights Commission, Greater Des Moines Partnership, WDM Historical Society, Des Moines University, and WDM Community School District. The WDM Chamber received this award for their intensive programs supporting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the area and region.

The WDM Chamber’s DEI programs and events held in the last year include a DEI Committee led by Angela Jackson, senior vice president diversity, equity and inclusion at Athene; the Black & Brown Business Summit and Pitch Competition, featuring Diversity Week, the Mel Essex Award; DEI Workplace Excellence Awards; nonprofit BIPOC nonprofit fundraisers benefiting Jewels Academy and the NAACP Des Moines, the Latino Trade Network; Mentoring for Women and Elevate for Women.

“It takes hundreds of passionate individuals to support the groundbreaking work our DEI Committee, team, board and volunteers do to help make West Des Moines the most welcoming city in the United States,” said Katherine Harrington, president and CEO of the WDM Chamber. “We are all working hard to foster the best community we can for our minority business owners, employees, companies and community.”

Additional honors given at the WDM MLK Jr. Celebration included 6 MLK Youth Leadership Scholarship Awards, the Community Leadership Award given to Sanjita Pradhan of Sanjita Pradhan Consulting and a Committee Champion Award given to Allison Ullestad, recreation coordinator at the City of WDM Parks and Recreation.
