Litigation Paralegal

Whitfield & Eddy Law is seeking a Litigation Paralegal with experience with complex litigation cases in various commercial and business litigation practice areas such as contracts, construction, insurance defense, personal injury, product liability, employment, and others. Appellate experience is a plus.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

This individual will work directly with our attorneys, their clients, and other staff, in a range of legal support functions to include but not limited to:
 

  • Gather and summarize appropriate documentation, rules, and citations for drafting and/or reviewing complex pleadings, briefs, motions, forms, etc.;
  • Review work product for privilege, completeness, and accuracy based on the facts, law, rules, and legal proceedings
  • Discovery:
    • Use E-Discovery and litigation management software to assist with and complete discovery requests and responses in a timely manner;
    • Developing and assisting with ESI protocols and implementation of same in connection with discovery responses
  • Conduct research to determine what is valid under the applicable law or related procedural rules for pleadings and/or briefs;
  • Communicate with witnesses to gather information needed for cases and conduct fact research to verify witness-provided information or public record search information for witnesses;
  • Assist in preparation, review, and summary of depositions to include review of documents to determine and prepare applicable exhibits using litigation software issue coding of deposition testimony and exhibits:
  • Assist in preparation for trials (including appeals), pre- and post-trial pleadings and filings, and post-trial submissions such as coordinating and preparing witnesses, subpoenas for witnesses, video testimony, and exhibits (witness outlines, flow charts, spreadsheets, or other demonstrative evidence);
  • Take ownership of deadlines with a proactive approach to anticipate attorney needs to meet deadlines or suggest motions to extend deadlines;
  • May attend trials to help with electronic presentation of exhibits for juries, track status of exhibits, and confer with attorneys, clients, and witnesses for trial presentation and strategy;
  • Assist with all aspects of appeal work to include deadlines, review of prior case details for corroborating precedence and format of briefs and appendices as required by court rules, and research to verify or locate relevant case law;
  • Assist on other cases as needed for document reviews, e-discovery, etc.;
  • May take on a variety of projects related to the legal field in general, including areas outside litigation.
     

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor degree; or Associate degree with completion of an accredited paralegal program (Certified Legal Assistant/Paralegal preferred);
  • At least 5+ years of experience as a paralegal with an emphasis in broad spectrum litigation and other areas of law;
  • Experience with trial presentation and litigation support software programs;
  • Knowledge of the following:
    • IA & Federal procedural rules, IA Support Master, Iowa Docs
    • IA Rules of Appellate Procedure for formatting and requirements for appeal briefs
    • IA and Federal Court Electronic Filing Systems (EDMS, CM/ECF, Secretary of State)
  • Ability to:
    • Multi-task under pressure (competing deadlines, multiple attorney tasks)
    • Gain confidence of attorneys by providing quality, quantity and timely assistance
    • Help resolve potential conflicts of competing work and/or deadlines
    • Organize priorities, deadlines, case documents, and files and manage cases such that work is completed timely and readily available for retrieval
  • Strong communication skills – both verbal and written (proper use of punctuation, spelling, grammar, and style)
  • Strong attention to detail, with excellent proficiency in proofreading
  • Excellent comprehension skills - read, analyze and retain information of complex legal documents and issues
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including but not limited to knowledge of spreadsheets and use of formulas, reference coding in Word (e.g. Table of Contents, Table of Authorities)
