Call for Volunteers! WDM Poverty Simulation
All of our volunteer slots are filled for this simulation. Thank you for your interest!
Calling all volunteers! YES, POVERTY IS REAL…EVEN IN West Des Moines.
Each year, the WDM Leadership Academy class members take part in a Poverty Simulation. To be successful, the simulation needs many volunteers to fill different roles during the afternoon session.
While this is an energizing exercise, you will also find it to be eye-opening, humbling and impactful. The simulation gives you real insight into the obstacles and barriers faced everyday by those living in poverty.
And they live right here in West Des Moines.
We are reaching out for volunteers. Here are the details:
Thursday, November 21
12:00-4:00 pm
West Des Moines Christian Church -next door to THE Athletic Club (formerly Prairie Life Fitness)
4501 Mills Civic Parkway, WDM
You need no advance training to participate. Upon arrival you will be served a “soup kitchen” style lunch, followed by training in your specific role for the simulation. Volunteers will primary serve as “towns-folk”, i.e., bankers, teachers, employers, social service workers, police, etc. Some volunteers may also play the role of a family member facing poverty. You will be assigned roles when you arrive for the Simulation. We need a total of 80 volunteers for a successful Poverty Simulation, so if you know of anyone else who would like to participate, please encourage them to sign up as well!

I know you’ll be glad you did. Thank you.
