Paddle & Perspective: A President's Council River Expedition Experience

Join the West Des Moines Chamber for an exclusive President's Council Experience as we embark on a guided 2.8-mile canoe and kayak expedition along the beautiful Raccoon River. Designed specifically for beginners, this relaxed and scenic adventure offers the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow business leaders while enjoying the outdoors.

Led by local kayaking enthusiast and former West Des Moines Chamber Board Chair and Foundation Chair Chris Nelson, participants will paddle at a comfortable pace while exploring the river's natural beauty, stopping along sandbars, and taking in views that few get to experience.

Your adventure begins at the Raccoon River Boathouse at Raccoon River Park. From there, we'll paddle across Blue Heron Lake before making a brief portage over a nearby trail. Once back on the water east of the Athene Pedestrian Bridge, you'll enjoy a scenic stretch of the Raccoon River—including a unique view of the iconic bridge from the water—before concluding near Paws & Pints on 63rd Street.

No equipment? No problem. Canoes and kayaks will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own life jacket, though one can be provided if needed. 

Following the expedition, participants will be transported back to their vehicles at the Raccoon River Boathouse.

Important Notes:

• Space is limited to just 10 total participants.
• Participants should be comfortable spending several hours outdoors, and feel free to bring your favorites beverages for the trip.
• Wear clothing appropriate for water activities and weather conditions.
• Participants should expect a short portage carrying their craft over a trail section.
