A day in the life…
Wondering what a day in the life of a Patient Accounts Supervisor at The Iowa Clinic might look like?
As the Patient Accounts Supervisor, you will lead and develop a high-performance patient accounts team responsible for managing inbound/outbound inquiries, escalated disputes, and payment collections. You’ll oversee daily operations—ensuring service-level targets are met—coach staff on systems and conflict-resolution techniques, monitor key performance indicators, and drive continuous process improvements.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Oversee daily patient accounts operations, ensuring inbound/outbound call, chat, and email coverage and timely resolution
- Coach and mentor staff on billing systems, medical terminology, and conflict-resolution techniques
- Facilitate and oversees the training and orientation of employees and provides day-to-day operational supervision of assigned staff. Leads in hiring new employees, employee evaluations and employee corrective action as appropriate.
- Handle escalated billing disputes and complex account issues; negotiate solutions and de-escalate conflicts
- Monitor and report on team performance metrics (call volume, handle time, resolution rate, collection goals) and drive improvements
- Monitors and facilitates files being sent to outside agencies/vendors. Confirms that files sent balance to files received.
- Audit account documentation for accuracy and compliance with HIPAA and billing regulations; escalate systemic errors
- Coordinate staffing schedules to meet service-level targets and manage peak volume periods
- Analyze aging receivables and payment-plan adherence; recommend process enhancements
- Collaborate with revenue cycle, clinical, and insurance teams to resolve cross-functional billing issues
- Lead process-improvement initiatives to boost efficiency and patient satisfaction
- Maintains working knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of Patient Accounts and can perform the functions in the event of an absence or increased workload.
- Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Ability to direct the work of others while personally handling multiple tasks in a variety of situations.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. in addition to keyboarding and 10-key.
- Requires organizational and self-motivational skills with ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and focused amid constant interruptions in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality.
- Ability to assess situations, make informed decisions and work within delegated authority.
- Ability to think independently and use good judgement for situations which require initiative and innovation to appropriately resolve and escalate issues.
Minimum Job Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Licensure/Certification: None
Work Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience in a healthcare environment and 2 years supervisory experience required. Medical billing, patient collections, and customer service experience preferred. Working knowledge of medical terminology required.
