Des Moines University Clinic Welcomes First Psychology Intern

DES MOINES, IA (08/26/2026) For the first time, Des Moines University Clinic has a psychology intern on its team, providing advanced clinical training while expanding access to mental health care.

"Bringing on our first psychology intern is an historic step for us," says Autumn Brunia, DO, a 2019 graduate of Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences' Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program and psychiatrist at DMU Clinic - Behavioral Health. "It's an opportunity to do our part in addressing the need for psychologists in Iowa while helping to train and retain them here long-term."

DMU matched with Aubrey McEnroe from the PhD program in counseling psychology at the University of Iowa. McEnroe's one-year internship at DMU Clinic began in July. McEnroe sees adult patients as a provisionally licensed psychologist.

"We're excited to welcome Aubrey to our team," Brunia says. "She is an Iowa native with a strong background in evidence-based psychotherapy. Aubrey will see adult patients for individual therapy and help with new psychotherapy groups we are starting."

McEnroe chose DMU because of its commitment to patient-centered care and the opportunity to join an integrated care team. "What excites me most about this new role is the opportunity to serve Iowans through various clinical experiences including psychological assessment, individual therapy and group therapy," McEnroe says. "I look forward to collaborating with professionals from different disciplines while learning from experienced mentors."

DMU is a member of the Cy-Hawk region of the National Psychology Training Consortium. NPTC provides doctoral psychology internship opportunities in underserved areas. McEnroe plans to practice in rural Iowa following graduation.

"This role is an important step toward becoming an independently licensed psychologist," McEnroe says. "I am grateful to continue building my clinical skills at DMU while building a strong foundation for future psychology interns here."
