WEST DES MOINES, IA (Tuesday, November 19, 2024) – The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce (WDM Chamber) has announced the lineup for its next luncheon set to take place on Thursday, December 12, 2024, featuring five expert speakers. The event, presented by Bank Iowa and Shive-Hattery, will focus on the future of hospitality, entertainment, and tourism in West Des Moines and Central Iowa. Industry experts will share insights on emerging technologies, changing consumer behaviors, and new market opportunities shaping these industries locally.

The tourism and hospitality sectors have become key economic drivers in Iowa. In 2023, Iowa welcomed over 35 million visitors, generating more than $9 billion in economic impact and supporting nearly 70,000 jobs statewide, according to data from Travel Iowa. Central Iowa, including West Des Moines, has emerged as a growing destination for sports tourism, entertainment events, and culinary experiences, contributing significantly to the region's economic growth.

Recent trends also show a shift in consumer preferences:

  • Technology in Hospitality: By 2025, 72% of travelers are expected to seek personalized experiences powered by emerging technologies like AI and IoT (McKinsey & Co.).

  • Sports Tourism Growth: Sports-related travel accounted for over $39 billion in direct spending nationwide in 2023 (Sports Events and Tourism Association), with venues like the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex attracting regional and national events to Central Iowa.

  • Culinary Tourism Boom: 88% of U.S. travelers now prioritize food and drink experiences as part of their trips, creating opportunities for Iowa’s growing restaurant and entertainment sectors (National Restaurant Association).

“This luncheon is more than just a conversation—it's about equipping our community with the knowledge and tools to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape,” said Katherine Harrington, president and CEO of the WDM Chamber. “By understanding emerging trends and opportunities, we can ensure West Des Moines and Central Iowa remain vibrant hubs for hospitality, entertainment, and tourism.”
