Historic Valley Junction Announces Small Business Weekend

West Des Moines, 11/21/24 – The Historic Valley Junction Foundation is pleased to announce Small Business Weekend in Valley Junction, a weekend-long holiday shopping event to support local businesses and the local economy. The event will combine three shopping days: Plaid Friday on November 29th celebrates the diversity of small business and offers an alternative to the big box store frenzy, Small Business Saturday on November 30th is the biggest small business shopping day of the year and will be kicked off with Running of the Reindeer, a family-friendly costumed fun run down 5th Street before the shops open, and Cyber Monday specials for those that are unable to attend in person that weekend. Each store will have their own specials and mini events which can be found on their websites and social media.

The Running of the Reindeer will start at 8:45 in front of St Kilda at 333 5th St and go three blocks south to Railroad Park where a costume contest will take place. Three lucky people, the race winner, best adult costume, and best child costume, will each win a $100 gift certificate good at any shop in the district. Restaurants will serve brunch and hot drinks early, and the shops will begin to open at 9:00 am with most opening at 10:00 am. Shopping will take place throughout the day with the shops each hosting their own specials.

The purpose of all three days is to provide an alternative to the big box store shopping stye, finding unique gifts not found at those big box stores (some made by local artisans), and to support the local economy and the people in it.
